The Industrial IoT Changes the Game for Process Manufacturing

Mar 06 2018, 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM

As more and more of the world becomes accustomed to how the Industrial Internet of Things is changing the face of business, we can start looking at more specific examples of what this technology can achieve. A good example is Touchless Order Processing. How will business models change when our tanks on-site across the world take care of re-ordering their own materials? In this opening keynote, Nils Herzberg describes the world of innovation available to industries through intelligent application of IIoT technology – beyond predictive maintenance or simple optimization. Join Nils for a high-level discussion on the possibilities of a connected plant before diving into a real-world case study from BASF.

Industry Perspective on Digital Transformation

Mar 06 2018, 9:05 AM - 9:50 AM

The chemical industry landscape today is vastly different than a mere decade ago. New leaders from China and other emerging markets are poised to take over the top spot in an industry that has historically been dominated by Europe and the United States. The industry lines have blurred as traditional chemical companies get closer and closer to the end consumer in order to become more ‘demand driven’. And yet, despite the changes, there are a few constraints – a relentless focus on operational efficiency, the growing complexity of regulations and a shrinking and retiring workforce. Join SAP’s Global VP of Chemicals Thorsten Wenzel (Ph.D.) as he shares how SAP is helping to prepare chemical manufacturers for the digital economy through digital transformation. Thorsten will showcase how companies are leveraging S/4HANA with chemical best practices and approaching business networks in an entirely new light. He will demonstrate how S/4HANA can enable the digital enterprise and drive value creation.

Agile Architecture and Delivery to Re-purpose IT Asset for M&A Initiatives

Mar 06 2018, 10:50 AM - 11:30 AM

Historically, BP always adopted traditional architecture and delivery approach to support system cloning/data carving for divestment projects. This resulted in higher cost and longer delivery time. The new approach to architecture and delivery fit best for M&A initiatives that require high flexibility to change the architecture and design to suit prospective buyers. This presentation will cover agile architecture and innovative approach to delivering IT projects to repurpose SAP systems, with the goal to support divestment initiatives at much lower cost within shorter delivery timelines. BP completed divestment of a Chemicals plant in 2016 through committed application of agile practices on data and architecture management. The presentation will focus on innovative cloning approach to deploy SAP system in the Cloud with carved-out data to support divestment initiatives. Join Noorddin Taj in this session to learn about a completed divestment at BP and how the to leverage micro service architecture to further improve agility and short project delivery to increasing demand to divest and integrate to optimize business portfolio. The presentation will cover:

  • Key Success factor for Divestment Initiatives
  • Delivery approach
  • Key outcome achieved
  • What would you do differently in the future?

Advanced Analytics at Dow: Enabling Businesses to Drive Expanded Margins

Mar 06 2018, 10:50 AM - 11:30 AM

Advanced Analytics at Dow have and continue to focus on enhancing business and functional margins. Dow’s business and functional leadership use internal SAP data through home grown reporting systems, dashboards, spreadsheets which include current and historical data sets to enable decision making.  This has proven to be sufficient for current business needs, however does not allow for significant breakthrough margin improvements. Dow leaders were challenging for more assistance in how they incorporate forward looking analytics and optimization recommendations to enable overall decision making. The focus of the Advanced Analytics team include incorporating unique ways to use advanced statistical and data methods/capabilities to provide improved recommendations that drive margin management (price, volume & cost). The Dow Advanced Analytics team was able to develop multiple customized solutions that deliver margin enhancements through price positioning/price leakage recommendations, increased sales volume and revenue growth and cost optimization through analytic methods/concepts. These methods include customer/product segmentation, forecasting, elasticity and optimization for price analytic solutions; data mining and market basket techniques to assist in delivering cross sell and lead identification recommendations and solutions; and hierarchical time series forecasting to deliver raw material forecasts. The Advanced Analytics team enabled and unleashed over $100MM in value from multiple customized solutions that were embedded in the functional and business work processes and operating disciplines over the last two years. All of which couldn’t be possible without the use of internal SAP data direct feeds and external data sourcing. Key business benefits include: embedding sophisticated analytics within businesses; data driven decision making and measured business results.

How Axalta Coating Systems Closed its Data Center and Moved Applications to Cloud

Mar 06 2018, 11:40 AM - 12:30 PM

Axalta Coating System, a spin-off from DuPont, had a myriad of complex IT applications that were migrated from the legacy DuPont data center to a newly built data center in Axalta in 2013. Despite the new data center, Axalta’s teams continued to struggle with multiple elements of their data strategy such as: unsupported/multiple versions of the operating systems, databases and applications; frequent infrastructure outages; high CapEx compared to OpEx; a complex web of interfaces; lack of skilled resources from the vendors and many more. In 2017, Axalta chose to migrate all the applications in their data center to cloud and close their data center. Axalta worked with a long-term vision of converging entirely onto a SAAS model, intending to fully embrace SAP’s Public Cloud solution once the system fully matures. During the migrations, applications were classified based on their proximity to SAP as loosely coupled vs. tightly coupled. They were put in different buckets and were migrated to different clouds like SAP HEC, AWS, AZURE etc. Migration strategy was mix of lift & shift and limited transformation. As of today, the data center is closed. The journey isn’t complete, and Axalta is still contending with a number of ongoing challenges, such as: cloud to cloud integration; complex pricing structures; cloud security; and network performance among others. Nevertheless, this move has resulted in significant improvements and benefits that outweigh the challenges as Axalta continues to resolve those remaining difficulties.

Spin Doctor: Leveraging the Spin-off to Modernize SAP

Mar 06 2018, 1:30 PM - 2:10 PM

When AdvanSix was spun off Honeywell in October 2016, we had an aged SAP ECC environment, 16 years in the making, hosted on traditional infrastructure in a Honeywell data center.  To exit our transfer service agreement with Honeywell, we needed to migrate our SAP environment out of the Honeywell data center.  The simplest, fastest approach would be to reproduce, identically, in our data center or a co-lo.  Regardless of approach, we were embarking on an expensive, time consuming project, requiring extensive testing across our organization.  If we reproduced exactly what we had, that investment would result in little to no additional value to the company. After thoroughly exploring options, we decided to modernize and future-proof our SAP environment by upgrading to Suite on HANA and leveraging the public cloud.  Strategically, we embrace a cloud first strategy.  We considered running our environment as is in the cloud, but with the support of SAP, we determined that a small extension of our project timeline would facilitate the necessary enhancement pack upgrade for a database conversion to HANA.  We explored multiple hosting options and selected Microsoft Azure, because they 1) provided a certified HANA appliance at the size necessary for our environment and 2) have rich features including security controls necessary to protect our information. Full SAP project scope also includes conversion from AIX operating system to Linux and Windows OS and greenfield implementations of SAP Global Trade Solutions (GTS) for Denied Parties Screening, SAP Governance Risk Compliance (GRC) for Segregation of Duties (SOD) management, and SAP PO replacing SAP PI.  Additionally, SAP environment has 50+ interfaces including EDI, SaaS applications, and applications hosted in hybrid cloud.  Project timeline is 9 months, including post-go-live support. We are on track to be live in with SAP Suite on HANA on Azure February 4, 2018.  We are already finding that HANA delivers enhanced performance across our processes.  We are working with our integrator, Fujitsu, to establish a cloud governance model that facilitates flexible, on demand use of infrastructure, creating a cost-effective approach to manage our environment.  Once live, we will be in a good position to explore S/4 and define how we will leverage S/4 at AdvanSix as we continue to modernize our SAP environment.

Smart Use of Existing SAP Technology at Huntsman Transforms the End-to-End Supply Chain

Mar 06 2018, 1:30 PM - 2:10 PM

After years of running SAP, it was time for a strategic change. From ‘Best of Breed’ Architecture to Complete Digital Transformation: The ‘SAP Way’

Mar 06 2018, 1:30 PM - 2:10 PM

What business challenge we faced: A global corporation specializing in manufacturing and distribution of specialty chemicals was facing challenges from its non-responsive & poorly connected supply chain, inadequate & non real-time operational intelligence and lack of data governance practices, all leading up to higher cost of business operations. How we went about solving it:

  • Implemented SAP Best Practice for Chemicals as part of Suite-On-HANA to connect the internal operations with external supply chain partners as well as to digitize the manufacturing operations
  • Implemented SAP Master Data Governance suite to transform a fragmented data management practice into a orderly and integrated center-led operation
  • Leveraged SOH’s internal reporting capabilities to significantly improve the operational and boardroom intelligence
Result of your process change/work/solution to the business:
  • Enabled a digitized, streamlined, tax efficient and connected supply chain integrating company’s internal operations with customers, suppliers, 3PLs, and regulatory bodies
  • Enabled a unified, standardized and integrated master data management practice across all global locations
  • Enabled intelligent insights both at the operational and at decision making level
Key Business Benefits:
  • Responsive supply chain with reduced cycle time between hand-off’s, improved visibility across all connected partners, reduced cost of operation across borders and higher degree of regulatory compliance
  • Improved accuracy in master data maintenance, reduction in redundant manual effort/tasks, reduced cycle time between requisition-to-deploy for all master data related requirements and higher automation
  • Availability of better quality and better-timed information for improved insights-to-action at both operational and at the executive level

An Agile Manifesto for Chemicals: Increasing Speed and Agility for Today’s Digital Business Climate

Mar 06 2018, 2:20 PM - 3:00 PM

Air Products’ digital journey has included nontraditional ways to develop new business capabilities for internal and external use. The continually increasing pace of advancement of digital technologies requires agility and speed in both development and adoption to realize the full business value of these technologies. Speed has been a key consideration in how the company has structured its digital vision and activities. There have been several key guiding principles and examples that the company has employed over the past year to realize its digital vision:

  • Organize around Key Competencies first: The company identified three main areas of competency and business value to focus on in 2017 - Customer Interaction, Plant Operations and Supply Chain, and Technology innovation.
  • Use nontraditional development models: Many of these are common to the software/hi-tech space but are nontraditional to the Chemical industry, including agile/dev ops development teams and short-term innovation events like “hackathons”. The company has also focused on Proof of Concepts (POCs) and Pilots as ways to increase speed of implementation.
  • Develop a “digital ecosystem” to facilitate change: The digital evolution will change how all of us work in the future, so introducing employees to digital tools and establishing a digital culture in other aspects of their work is a critical component of change management and speed of adoption.
Using these principles in 2017, Air Products was able to successfully introduce and implement new digital capabilities in several areas. Join Mark Binnig as he discusses some of the highlights of how they incorporated speed and agility into their digital program.

Agility Meets Humility: How to Make IT Sustainable

Mar 07 2018, 8:45 AM - 9:20 AM

What does being humble have to do with running a successful chemicals company? With competitors and startups always on the verge of disrupting parts of your business, humility is what keeps you from thinking it couldn’t happen to you. But humility by itself isn’t enough to keep you ahead of the game. It takes a combination of being humble and being agile to best sustain and grow your organization. Laurie Miller, CIO of Covestro, has the not so humble goal of changing the world by creating a better organization with a focus on digital preparedness and sustainable practices. Sustainability means more than just environmental impact – it means sustaining the business through better talent retention programs. It means dedication to diversity and inclusion, generating new ideas through a plurality of viewpoints. And it means developing partnerships with likeminded organizations that recognize the need for transformation. Covestro and SAP are co-developing innovative new ways to more tightly integrate their systems and embrace agility. Hear from Laurie about her strategies for moving Covestro forward while remaining humble.

Steps to Define Your SAP Journey, Strategy and Roadmap to S/4HANA Adoption

Mar 07 2018, 11:35 AM - 12:15 PM

Ingevity is a specialty chemicals manufacturer and supplier specializing in pine oil chemicals, tall oil fatty acids and activated carbon products. Ingevity, like most SAP Chemical clients, is considering their ERP future and alignment with S/4HANA. Ingevity’s internal team of savvy SAP Experts spent months self-educating and evaluating future options to manage the SAP landscape, which was a carve out of a highly customized (mill-products focused) MeadWestvaco SAP instance. After months of detailed research, Ingevity engaged a small group of SAP experts from Enowa. The objective for the joint engagement was to devise a strategy and a roadmap towards adoption of relevant components of SAP S/4 HANA Enterprise Management and integrated components through various approach options (green-field, lift-shift, etc.). To achieve the stated objectives, the team conducted a series of workshops to discover necessary and relevant input and to define the output. This session will share details of the following methodology and steps:

  • High Priority Initiatives
  • Value Discovery
  • Evaluation of Deployment Options
  • Change Impact Assessment
  • Consolidated Strategy and Roadmap
In conclusion, you will learn the process your company can take to compile the reasonable and relevant strategies and roadmap options as well as a high-level future solution scope to build the foundation for budgeting and planning purposes for a S/4HANA journey.

HANA Cloud Platform with Analytics Cloud Reporting Enables Visibility and Usability at KMG Chemicals

Mar 07 2018, 12:25 PM - 1:15 PM

Since KMG Chemicals went live on SAP, all reporting was being done using standard SAP transactions and table extracts.  It caused several problems including; large level of effort, spreadsheets with different results based on the user’s formulas, and difficulty trusting the results.  It was determined that we needed a solution that would allow the business to quickly modify reports for their own needs, while also making sure that everyone was utilizing the reports in the same fashion i.e. comparing apples to apples.  The solution, implement SAP Hana Cloud Platform and SAP Analytics Cloud reporting.  These tools allow the IT group to build the data models and calculations, but it allowed the business to consume the models while building the reports look and feel to best suit their needs.  It created a better environment as it relates to reporting, because everyone can agree on the results.

A Single Source of Truth Brings Finance & Logistics Together at Ascend Materials for Reliable Cost-to-Serve

Mar 07 2018, 2:55 PM - 3:35 PM

Creating and maintaining an accurate Cost-to-Serve is crucial for pricing your products to achieve margin goals.  Manually and sometimes haphazardly guessing or using averages was producing the level of detail needed to reach our margin goals. Through the combined efforts of Finance and Logistics, Ascend Materials arrived at a solution. Project One was started to achieve a Single Source of Truth in financial reporting, but a sub-project of this effort was to have a clean cost-to-serve process for Commercial to price our product.  Finance worked with Logistics to ensure that 1) the rate tables in a third-party provider were kept up to date, 2) that there was a process check in SAP to find and fix any errors in the flow from 3PP to SAP, and then 3) automating the reporting which reduced manual intervention by 8 hours each month and reduced time to close the books by ½ day. Even with additional costs from unplanned accessorial charges – which every manufacturer/shipper encounters – we were able to achieve sustainable and reliable cost-to-serve data and reports.

The Industrial IoT Changes the Game for Process Manufacturing

As more and more of the world becomes accustomed to how the Industrial Internet of Things is changing the face of business, we can start looking at more specific examples of what this technology can achieve. A good example is Touchless Order Processing. How will business models change when our tanks on-site across the world take care of re-ordering their own materials? In this opening keynote, Nils Herzberg describes the world of innovation available to industries through intelligent application of IIoT technology – beyond predictive maintenance or simple optimization. Join Nils for a high-level discussion on the possibilities of a connected plant before diving into a real-world case study from BASF.

How IoT & Industry 4.0 Impact the Now & the Future of Chemicals

Drawing on insight from both BASF and SAP, stay tuned for this facilitated conversation between Nils and Andreas. They’ll discuss SAP’s core emphasis on developing IoT applications that meet the needs of customers and how BASF is leveraging big data to realize the full benefits of Industry 4.0. Led by Rich Seltz, the Vice President of Digital Transformation at SAP, this is the capstone to both Nils’ and Andreas’ stories of how the changes to manufacturing today will echo far into the future.

Industry Perspective on Digital Transformation

Advanced Analytics at Dow: Enabling Businesses to Drive Expanded Margins

An Agile Manifesto for Chemicals: Increasing Speed and Agility for Today’s Digital Business Climate

HANA Cloud Platform with Analytics Cloud Reporting Enables Visibility and Usability at KMG Chemicals

Pure Play OpEx Savings During SAP OS/DB Migrations

Do you have expiring SAP servers that require updating?  Are your SAP enterprise environments on a legacy operating system and would like to migrate to one of the current operating systems?  Is your SAP database size so large that your system performance is degrading and/or you are exploring an archiving project?   Perhaps consider using an SAP OS/DB migration as an opportunity to resolve these immediate pain points while at the same time transforming your project spend into recurring Opex savings.

Like all SAP customers have or will, Beam Suntory has also faced similar challenges.  In partnership with Biztech Solutions, Beam Suntory has transformed these pain points into noteworthy Pure Play Opex Savings projects.    Taking a budget-conscious approach while continuing to make strides on their SAP HANA journey, Beam Suntory has been able to reduce recurring IT Opex spend by more than $2MM/annually through several lesser known tips and tricks related to SAP OS/DB migrations, Hardware Consolidation, Data Density, and Compression.  Additionally, these fiscal savings have been accompanied by performance boosts as staggering as 2-3x faster transactional processing.    We will discuss a few of these use cases, and the monetary and performance impacts of these projects.

Key Benefits:

  1. Migrating large databases (>5TB) to new OS/hardware in 24 hours downtime

  2. SAP performance improvements as much as 3x in SAP ECC

  3. Database space reductions (2:1 to 4:1) for ECC, BW, CRM, SCM

Continuous Improvement – Leveraging SAP to Improve Planning Capabilities

Supply chain planning in SAP is an ongoing process rather than a one-time event.   Evolving business requirements and changing industry landscapes require the evolution of both business processes and supporting systems in order to drive business benefits.  This impetus for continuous improvement is particularly strong in the Chemicals industry and manifests itself via pressure on asset utilization, customer service and  working capital and cost management.  Come listen to Steve MacCorkle from INVISTA discuss lessons learned in implementing and continuing to optimize Supply Chain planning with SAP in a globally integrated chemical supply chain.  Topics will include mapping planning requirements to SAP APO, how to address supply chain challenges with system supported solutions, and how to avoid unnecessary complexity.   Steve will focus on the mainline planning functions of Demand Planning, Supply Planning and Detailed Scheduling.

A Single Source of Truth Brings Finance & Logistics Together at Ascend Materials for Reliable Cost-to-Serve
